Coir hails from South India wherein there are huge coconut plantations, and everything from culture to dishes, the southern coastal belt evolves around coconut. Kerala, popularly known as the God’s own country alone accounts for 61% of total coconut production and 85% of total coir products. Coir has come a long way from its small beginnings in the State of Kerala, centuries back. Today, in a professional and modern industry, various products made from the natural coir, these are coir yarn, coir mats, garden pots and buckets, non-woven products, coir pith, coir rope, coir brushes.
Coir and coir products are now exported to 110 countries all over the world. The export of coir and coir products had set an all-time high record during the year 2020-21. A total quantity of 1,163,213 MT of coir and coir products valued at Rs.3778.98 crores were exported from the country during the year 2020-21 compared to 988,996 MT valued at Rs.2757.90 crores during the previous year.
