Onion
Onions contain organic sulfur compounds. These compounds are the reason why onions have such a sharp, strong taste and smell. Onions belong to the Allium family of plants, which also includes chives, garlic, and leeks. These vegetables have characteristic pungent flavours and some medicinal properties. Onions may also provide potential health benefits. These may include reducing the risk of several types of cancer, improving mood, and maintaining skin and hair health.
The Major Onion producing states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Telangana. Maharashtra ranks first in Onion production with a share of 28.32%.
India exported 15.88 lakh tonnes in the 2017-18 season, 21.82 lakh tonnes in the 2018-19 season, 18.49 lakh tonnes in the 2019-20 and 15.75 lakh tonnes in 2020-21. In FY21, India exported $378 million worth of onions, 15% higher than the previous year.
Small Onion
Shallots are small, brown-skinned onions with purplish flesh, and their bulbs are made up of multiple lobes, a little bit like the way garlic bulbs are divided into individual cloves.
